OUR INITIATIVE

For the first time Vetusta team participates in Euroscola. We started with nervousness and fear but as time passed these emotions were replaced by happiness and hope seeing how a blank blog was being filled with different activities that we carried out. Activities, which often involved feelings and emotions that are impossible to put into words.

Our initiative focuses on women throughout the history. It doesn’t only involve talking about European women but also represents the difference that exists between them, in the 21th Century. Women that in our opinion seem to live in worlds that on one hand are so different and similar on another.

The final objective of our initiative was to represent the importance of the European woman with all the advantages and liberties that she possesses. However representing the difference between two worlds so different, to a group of teenagers that only seem to be attracted by the technology world, turned out to be a difficult task.

We spent long hours trying to come up with interesting, fun and educational activities that represented the problems that different communities face. After several weeks of hard work and dedication, our greatest achievement seemed to be, seeing our classmates and staff getting touched by the interview that we had with two amazing dedicated Saharawi women, Ebbaba Hameida and Fatma Brahim Salem Jatri.

Our initiative required the participation of different departments from our school, such as the History, Audiovisual Culture, Philosophy and English Department. Therefore we would like to take this opportunity to thank them again for all their support and hard work! Also thank you to Ebbaba and Fatma for dedicating some their time to us and last but not least to Euroscola for teaching us to appreciate everything we have.

Women represent progress and this is what we wish to see reflected throughout the world.

OUR DREAM

After several months of hard work and great times our initiative comes to an end as our dream, which is no other that Strasbourg. Euroscola filled our afternoons with laughter and revelations and it turned out to become a good friend that taught us to value and cherish our great Europe.

Our initiative helped us see how lucky we are to live in Spain, a European country where education, health and freedom exist. We have learned not to take for granted these three important values, which in other countries or communities such as the Saharawi community they still remain a dream to fight for.

Moreover our initiative has often filled us with joy, sadness and in some occasions with contradictory feelings such as helpless. All these feelings are further represented in each one of our activities. For example in the stop motion that we made, one of our team members, Sheherezade, in her dream visualizes all our hard work throughout this project, which leads to a final destination: Strasbourg.

CUPCAKES FOR A CAUSE

Today we organized a bake sale!

We sold 120 cupcakes and 3 cakes (2 UN cakes & 1 Saharawi brownie cake). At the end of the break, that lasts 30 minutes, everything was sold out. The students and the teachers were very eager to buy cupcakes with the flag of their favorite European country or the UN, or a slice of cake especially.  Everyone was informed that the money we were charging for these, were going to be donated to the NGO:  AMAL. At the end of the break we collected a total amount of 177€. We are very happy to know that in some way we are able to help the Saharawi people either by selling baking goods or organizing presentations about them.

What a great way to end this week!

28 WOMEN, 28 HISTORIES

This week we put in practice the theory that several days ago we taught to the students in class. Our idea was that of expressing the history of 28 important European women on the European map. The objective of this activity was to work on the learning competences of the students.  Throughout games we intended to teach the students from 2º ESO the European map, 28 countries and their flags and of course the courage of many women from these countries. The goal was to express the achievements of these courageous European women and how they succeeded in making their way into history. The students enjoyed this activity and learned how to distinguish our Europe.

A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE LIFE OF EBBABA HAMEIDA

Last Friday, during a History lesson, Mª Ángeles Escudero, the Social Studies teacher, introduced the students Ana Diestro and Sheherezade Gallego, members of our Euroscola team, to her class. The two girls spoke about the life of Ebbaba Hameida in English. They used the presentation on Google Drive elaborated some days before. As we have already mentioned Ebbaba was also a student at our high school. Do not miss her speech in the European Parliament in May 29, 2012. In our opinion, this Saharawi girl is a good example of perseverance, hard work and will power.

INTERVIEW WITH FATMA BRAHIM SALEM JATRI

Yesterday morning we interviewed Fatma Brahim Salem Jatri, the Delegate of the Saharawi People in Extremadura. She lives in Mérida but she came to our High School to answer some questions. After the interview, she explained some of the pictures from our exposition: "ONE VISION, TWO WORLDS", to us. The interview was interesting and we would like to take this opportunity to thank her for being with us. 

HANGOUT WITH EBBABA HAMEIDA

Yesterday we had the great opportunity to interview Ebbaba Hameida, who studied at Cuatro Caminos High School some time ago. She is a Saharawi woman who is fighting for the rights of Saharawi people. Because she lives in Madrid, where she is studying journalism, we had to interview her using Hangout, a recent communication tool that allows you to connect with people all over the world. The interview went smoothly and we are thankful that Ebbaba gave us the opportunity to meet her and chat with her. We are also very glad of the evolution of technology that makes almost everything and anything possible.
